Common Homeowner's Insurance Claims > Wind and Hail Damage

In our last post, we covered some of the most common claims that homeowners file each year. As the number one cause for damage, hail and wind account for the most significant insurance claims by homeowners nationwide. In this article, we’ll offer some insights on how to protect your home from suffering damage caused by hail and windstorms. In addition, the right VA Home Insurance is a requirement to give you the peace of mind you deserve.

Reinforce garage doors.

As the largest entrance to your home, it’s beneficial to reinforce the garage door before a massive storm hits. Whether you reinforce it with 2×4’s or you upgrade to a stormproof garage door, this will prevent unwanted debris and water from entering your home.

Protect windows and doors.

According to Angie’s List, consider installing steel or aluminum storm shutters on your windows, French doors and sliding glass doors. You can close the shutters quickly to prevent flying objects from breaking glass. Storm shutters typically cost between $50 and $60 per square foot of window, so a shutter for a 3-by-4-foot window would cost around $600 to $720.

Inspect your roof.

If you have loose shingles, you run the risk of allowing rainwater into your home. Enlist the help of a professional roofer to secure the shingles, or use a roofing cement to do the job yourself. A layer of waterproof material should be placed underneath the shingles, if it’s not there already, to create an additional barrier should the shingles be blown off.

Anchor big items.

Barbecues, patio furniture, sheds and more can become projectiles during a storm. To prevent damage to your home or your neighbor’s home, secure these items with ground anchors. If you know a storm is coming, do your best to move smaller items indoors.
